Join us for the July Zoom book discussion
Our next summer Zoom book discussion group will be on Thursday, July 25, starting at 10 AM PDT, 11 AM MDT, 12 Noon CDT, and 1 PM EDT. Our sessions usually last about 90 minutes. Out book for July is Thomas Merton’s spiritual classic, New Seeds of Contemplation. Merton probably did more than anyone to introduce spirituality and spiritual practices to modern American Christianity and this book has been the gateway for countless numbers of people. He also had a large audience outside Christian circles.
Thomas Merton (1915-1968) came to national prominence with the publication in 1948 of his bestselling autobiography, The Seven Storey Mountain. It tells the story of his childhood and wayward young adulthood, leading to his entering the monastery in 1941. Initially, his newfound Catholic faith tended to be narrow and exclusive. But in the 1950s Merton began to explore more diverse ideas and spiritual traditions. He also made contact with significant figures of other traditions, including monastics of other religions.
Published in 1962, New Seeds of Contemplation is the fruit of Merton’s wider exploration. The successor to a 1949 work, it really is a new book reflecting Merton’s new thinking, fuller spirituality, and growing awareness of the social tumult spreading across the world.
New Seeds of Contemplation is a reflection on the spiritual life. It is not a “how to” book nor is it a devotional book of daily readings. There is a thematic progression to the chapters but each of them can stand on their own. Single paragraphs or even single sentences can often lead to deep reflection.
The book is easily found online, in libraries, and often in bookstores. It is also available digitally. Everyone is welcome! Contact me if you have any questions and/or if you are interested in participating, so I can email you the Zoom connection information.
